The basic idea is that you will sell products to consumers, but there is also the option to recruit a team of sales people under you and earn from their sales also. You will also be able to generate an income from the team of the people recruited into your downline, even if you did not personally sponsor them.
Depending on the network marketing companies compensation plan this can happen down many levels, sometimes to infinity. So it's possible to end up earning a small commission from sales that are made hundreds of levels down your team (often called a downline). The potential with network marketing is Hugh. Many people are taught in MLM to find 5 serious people and teach them how to build the business so they too will find 5 others that do the same. Naturally this looks great on paper, but doesn't always work out like this in the real world.

Many people seem to forget this fact, and assume that you can just sign up and success will come to you, this isn't the case at all. Network marketing is definitely a people's business so you will have to be good with building relationships.
A lack of training from the companies themselves also contributes to the high failure rate. The usual starting point is to make a list of your immediate contact list and call them up and pitch them on your new business opportunity and products. Whilst this can bring some results and seems like a logical starting point, the results are usually pretty minimal.
The people who make it big in this business are those who know how to position themselves with the right posture and attract people to them, they also have figured out how to generate a consistent flow of leads on a daily basis. We are after all in a numbers game, and will get a lot of no's before you get a yes.
